How to make holidays easier for SEND families

What no one tells you about SEND travel – and how to make holidays feel easier

If you’ve ever looked at a holiday and thought, this sounds lovely in theory, but the reality of actually getting there feels overwhelming, I completely understand.

For a lot of families, holidays are sold as relaxing, exciting and easy.

But with SEND travel, that often isn’t the reality.

It’s not just about picking a nice hotel. It’s the transition days. The airport. The tiredness. The unknown. The worry that something won’t be how your child expected it to be. The mental load of trying to think of every possible thing that could throw the whole trip off before you’ve even packed a suitcase.

As a mum, I know that feeling well. And as a travel agent, it’s one of the reasons I care so much about helping families get this right.

SEND travel is not just about the holiday itself

I think one of the biggest things people underestimate about SEND travel is how much research it takes to make it work.

It’s not just:
“Where shall we go?”
or
“Which hotel looks nice?”

It’s questions like:

Will the airport be too much?
How long is the transfer?
Will there be safe foods?
Is there space to step away if things get overwhelming?
Will the entertainment work for them, but also be easy to leave?
Will the pools feel too busy?
How much walking is involved in the heat?
What happens if the first day goes wrong?

Because that’s the part people don’t always see. The planning side can feel relentless when you’re trying to make sure everyone else enjoys it, while quietly carrying all the worry yourself.

The first night can shape everything

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned came from a family trip to Turkey.

We got the flight timings wrong and arrived late. We were all tired, grumpy and out of sync. I hadn’t pre-planned the food properly, and when you’ve got children who need familiar or safe options, that matters more than people realise.

That first night was a nightmare.

Nothing huge or dramatic from the outside. Just that horrible combination of exhaustion, hunger, overwhelm and things not going how they needed to. The next day was much better after a good sleep, and once I’d spoken to the staff about food accommodations for the boys, things improved massively.

But that first night really tainted everything.

That’s exactly why I always say now that the details matter. Flight times matter. Arrival times matter. Food planning matters. The first 24 hours matter more than people think.

The best SEND holidays are not always the fanciest ones

For me, a good SEND-friendly holiday isn’t about the most luxurious hotel or the biggest waterpark.

It’s about finding the right fit.

That usually means looking for things like:

Space in the room, ideally a one-bedroom apartment or suite so everyone can step away when they need to
Quiet surroundings, but still close to shops, the beach or everything you need so you’re not doing too much walking in the heat
Buffet food, so children can choose from safe foods without everything feeling like a battle
Accessible entertainment that’s easy to dip in and out of
Pools with enough space that children can enjoy themselves without people constantly being in their personal space
Reliable Wi-Fi, because sometimes that one familiar thing can make all the difference

Those are the sorts of things that can turn a holiday from stressful to manageable.

The right hotel can change everything

We’ve had some brilliant experiences too, and those are the moments that remind me why this matters so much.

At Landmar Costa Los Gigantes, the boys were really well catered for. There were lots of different areas that worked well when they were overwhelmed, and having a Landi Suite meant we had a separate, quieter area at dinner, which made such a difference.

It wasn’t just about the hotel being “nice”. It was about it working for them.

That is such a huge difference.

Some destinations and properties really do lend themselves well to SEND travel when chosen carefully.

A few that stand out for me are:

On-site Disney hotels – because they make everything simpler and reduce a lot of the stress around transport and long days

Ruka for a week – because having more time to settle in makes such a difference, and the self-catering Ruka Suites give families that decompression space

Landmar Costa Los Gigantes – because of the layout, the choice of spaces, and how well it worked when the boys needed flexibility

Golden Avenida Suites in Salou – for similar reasons, with space and a setup that feels much easier for families who need breathing room

The bit people don’t see: the mental load

One of the hardest things about SEND travel is that you are often carrying all of it in your head.

You’re thinking about the airport before anyone else is.
The transfer before anyone else is.
The food before anyone else is.
The queues, the noise, the routine changes, the tiredness, the backup plans.

And sometimes the comments from other people really don’t help.

Things like:
“Everyone else copes.”
“You just need to make them.”

That kind of thinking completely misses the point.

Every SEND family is different. Every child is different. But there is a shared understanding there too. The extra planning. The second-guessing. The way one small thing can have a knock-on effect on the whole day.

That doesn’t mean families shouldn’t travel.

It means they deserve support that actually understands that.

Why the right planning makes such a difference

I recently helped a family travelling to France, and this is exactly where thoughtful planning mattered.

We got the airport special assistance right, chose Davy Crockett Ranch, and I was able to share practical tips that really helped, from Priority Pass advice to better parade viewing spots.

That’s the difference between just booking a holiday and planning one in a way that works for your family.

Sometimes it’s not about changing the whole trip. It’s about breaking down each step and working out what might make it easier.

Why supported group travel matters for SEND families too

This is also one of the reasons I believe group holidays can be so powerful for solo parents and SEND families.

Because when things go wrong, and let’s be honest, sometimes they do, you’re not on your own.

If your child has a meltdown getting on the coach, someone can help with the bags.
If they won’t go to dinner, someone can grab you a plate from the buffet.
If you’re having one of those moments where you just need somebody nearby who understands and doesn’t judge, that support is there.

Sometimes that kind of understanding is just as important as the hotel itself.

This is also one of the reasons I believe group holidays like SPARCLE can be so powerful for solo parents and SEND families.

If SEND travel feels overwhelming, you are not failing

You are not overthinking it.
You are not making a fuss.
You are not the only one who feels like this.

The truth is, SEND travel can feel overwhelming. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

It just means it often needs breaking down differently.

I always say the same thing to parents: I totally understand, because I’ve been there. It’s about looking at each step, working out what the worries are, and then finding ways to reduce them.

There is always a way.

It might not look like the “perfect” holiday someone else would choose. But that doesn’t matter. The right holiday is the one that works for your family.

And when it does work, it is so worth it.
