Gold River Hotel Review – Is It Worth Staying at PortAventura's Wild West Hotel?

After spending 4 nights at Gold River with my two boys during May half term, I can honestly say this is one of the most immersive and unique theme park hotels we've stayed in.

From the moment you walk through the wooden streets and hear the music playing, it genuinely feels like you've stepped into an old Wild West town. The theming throughout the hotel is incredible and, in many ways, I actually found PortAventura more immersive than Disneyland Paris.

Location – You Can't Beat It

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Gold River is the exclusive entrance straight into PortAventura Park.

Being able to walk into the park in just a few minutes made such a difference, especially with children. It also meant we could easily pop back to the hotel for a swim or a rest before heading back into the parks later. As a mum of neurodiverse children, i found this made a massive difference. Although we stayed in one of the outer buildings rather than the main hotel, it made very little difference. Everything is so accessible and easy to reach that nowhere felt far away.

The Rooms

One thing that really surprised me was how spacious the rooms were. Ours included a small kitchen area and there was plenty of space for all of us.

Gold River also offers lots of interconnecting rooms, making it a fantastic option for larger families or those travelling with grandparents or friends.

The rooms are themed rather than luxurious, but they are clean, comfortable and fit perfectly with the Wild West atmosphere.

The Pools

We were pleasantly surprised by how warm the main pool was. Even during May half term, it was warm enough to enjoy and there were always plenty of sunbeds available.

The pool area felt relaxed and never overly crowded.

The Food

Food was another pleasant surprise.

Breakfast included freshly cooked omelettes made to order, alongside all the usual buffet favourites.

In the evenings there were steaks and fish cooked fresh in front of you, and we found there was plenty of choice for everyone.

One of our favourite things about staying on-site was the Half Board Dine Around option. This allowed us to eat in several different locations across the resort.

We used this to visit Hotel PortAventura and found the buffet there to be almost identical to Gold River, giving us a nice change of scenery without sacrificing choice.

However, our favourite meal of the entire holiday was at the Italian restaurant in Ferrari Land. Unlike the buffets, this was table service and we managed to enjoy two drinks each within our meal allowance, making it excellent value and a lovely experience.

The Parks

Uncharted quickly became one of our favourite attractions and is unlike anything I've experienced before.

Street Mission was Evan's favourite attraction, while Rowan, who is a huge car enthusiast, absolutely loved Ferrari Land. Not necessarily because of the rides, but because of the incredible cars on display.

We all loved Flying Dreams, which was one of the highlights of the trip.

However, I do think it's worth setting expectations regarding Ferrari Land. While it's great for car lovers, families with children between 120cm and 140cm may actually find themselves quite limited. The two biggest rides have higher restrictions, and overall there aren't many attractions. We personally found Ferrari Land to be more of a half-day experience.

What surprised me most was just how beautiful PortAventura Park itself is. The theming throughout the different lands is stunning, and the atmosphere is wonderful. Evening Entertainment

Unlike many beach resorts, Gold River doesn't really have evening entertainment.

Instead, the highlight of the evening in the parks is the spectacular parade in PortAventura Park, which starts around 10 minutes before park closing.

There is also a children's mini disco from 7pm, which lasts around half an hour.

For us, this wasn't a negative. After spending all day in the parks and regularly clocking over 20,000 steps, we were more than happy to relax and head to bed!

Spacious rooms with kitchen facilities.
Lots of interconnecting room options.
Warm swimming pool.
Fantastic Half Board Dine Around option.
Easy access around the whole resort.
Excellent value compared with many other theme park holidays.
Uncharted and Flying Dreams.

Things To Consider
Rooms are themed rather than luxurious.
Ferrari Land is relatively small and may not offer enough rides for some families.
There is very little evening entertainment outside the park.
Expect lots of walking – we clocked up over 61,000 steps during our stay!


Would We Return?

Absolutely.

Gold River combines fantastic theming, spacious accommodation, excellent food and unbeatable access to PortAventura Park.

For families looking for a holiday that combines sunshine, pools and world-class theme parks, I genuinely think Gold River offers incredible value for money.
